Rain doesn’t dampen Athenas in 14-13 win over Colorado College

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team won 14-13 with a last minute goal against Colorado College in a rainy contest at Parents Field on Feb. 22. The win brings the Athenas to 2-0 on the season.

CMS cruised to a 5-0 lead to start the game, but the Colorado College Tigers (1-1) answered back to shorten the lead to 7-4 at the half. Colorado kept the momentum going and with 3:12 to play, the game was tied 12-12. After a goal at the 1:43 mark by Colorado College, CMS found themselves down a goal for the first time since the midpoint of the second half. CMS then answered within 30 seconds, to tie the game Ellen Berkley (CMC). She then scored the game-winning goal for the Athenas with only 22 seconds left to play.

The Athenas received a big effort offensively by Katie Hill (CMC) who scored four goals and Lauren Clubb (CMC) who had four assists, including the two that set up the game-tying and game-winning goals in the last two minutes, both scored by Ellen Berkley (CMC). Berkley had three scores for CMS. Mary Taussig of Colorado College led all scorers with five goals. Junior goalie Kate Anello (CMC) had eight saves for CMS in net.

The next CMS game is away vs. Whittier College on Feb. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
