Lead doesn’t hold for CMS in SCIAC Quarterfinal loss to Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – Back-to-back goals by Chapman to close out the first half changed the complexion of the match as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team fell 13-9 to Chapman in the quarterfinals of the SCIAC Women's Lacrosse Championships on April 23 at Wilson Field.

CMS' season concludes with a 9-9 overall record, 2-9 in SCIAC, while Chapman advances to the SCIAC Championships semifinals on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer. In 2014, CMS surpassed its win total from 2013 by a game.

For the second time in less than a week, Chapman defeated CMS in Orange. Wednesday's match started out well for CMS as CMS held a lead late into the first half. With 3:06 left in the first half, sophomore midfielder Katharine Connaughton gave CMS a 5-4 lead, its last of the game, on a free-position shot. Over the final 67 seconds of the first half, Chapman scored a pair of goals to take a 6-5 lead into the break.

A slow start to the second half sealed the Athenas' fate as the Panthers outscored the Athenas 6-1 over an 18-minute stretch to take a 12-6 lead with 12:16 left in the match.

With 5:30 on the clock, CMS narrowed the deficit to 12-9 with a goal by senior attacker Anthea Weixel and two scores from freshman midfielder Zoe Pinczower. CMS was unable to get any closer as Chapman closed out the win to advance to the semifinals of the SCIAC Championships.

Pinczower led the Athenas with four goals while Brooke Martini and Allie Kontny each scored three goals for the Panthers.
