CMS wins sudden-victory overtime thriller over Stevens

The Athena lacrosse team rallied from two goals down with under a minute remaining in overtime and went on to beat the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology 11-10 in the sudden-victory second overtime.  CMS improved to 3-3 with the win.

CMS dominated the first 20 minutes of play and led 6-1 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half and 7-4 at halftime.  The teams traded goals in the early minutes of the second half, but Stevens scored three straight goals over three and half minutes midway through the half to tie the game at eight.  Neither team was able to score a game-winner over the final 14:19 of the game and the game headed into a six minute overtime period.

Stevens scored midway through the overtime and looked to secure the victory with 1:12 remaining when the Athenas launched their comeback.  Izzy Laterzo scored with 47 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one and Christina Coffin tied the game on a free position shot with seven seconds remaining.  Coffin also scored the game-winner for CMS 1:19 into the second overtime.

Laterzo led CMS with three goals and also added an assist while Coffina and Katharine Connaugton scored two goals each.  Caitlyn Hughes and Kara Rafferty both scored three goals for the Ducks.  Sara Ginsburg had 12 saves between the pipes for CMS.

CMS next plays on Monday, March 17 in the first of three games in the Pacific Northwest.  They play at the University of Puget Sound at 6:00 pm.
