Season Ends With 3 OT Loss To Pomona-Pitzer in SCIAC First Round

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the second time in the 2013 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team and Pomona-Pitzer went into overtime, and for the second time Pomona-Pitzer came out on top. In Wednesday night's SCIAC Championships first round matchup on Merritt Field, Pomona-Pitzer defeated CMS 13-12 in triple overtime to advance to face Redlands on Saturday in the SCIAC Semifinals. CMS ends its season at 8-10 overall.

With 1:28 left in the third overtime, Jana London ended the game with the goal – her seventh of the game - for Pomona-Pitzer (11-7). At the end of regulation, both teams were even at 11. Just 52 seconds into the first overtime, Ally McLaughlin gave Pomona-Pitzer a 12-11 lead, a lead that they would hold until the 1:59 mark of the second overtime when senior midfielder Madi Shove evened the score at 12-12.

CMS (8-10) led for a good part of the game. With 8:53 remaining in the first half, a goal by freshman defender Alex Savino gave CMS a 3-2 advantage. CMS held its lead until the 5:39 mark of the second half when London evened the score at 10-10. CMS led by as many as four on two occasions during the game. After London tied the game at 10-10, senior attacker Rachel Darby answered for CMS with a goal to make the score 11-10 with 4:57 remaining in regulation. Less than a minute later, Kaitlin Jones tied the game for Pomona-Pitzer to send the game to overtime.

Statistically the game was very even matched as both teams had 10 saves, 14 ground balls and 22 fouls. Shove had a team-high seven goals in her final game for the Athenas while freshman midfielder Izzy Laterzo added two goals. Sophomore midfielder Christina Sutherland led the Athenas with two assists while freshman goalie Sara Ginsburg had 10 saves.
