Sutherland Caps Off Senior Night Comeback Win For Athenas In Sixth Street Showdown

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team beat the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 7-6 Wednesday night on Zinda Field for Senior Night. CMS is now 4-6 in SCIAC play and 8-9 overall.
It was Senior Night at Zinda Field for Athenas Madi Shove and Rachel Darby. After honoring the seniors, the game started with CMS down early 3-1. Pomona-Pitzer finished the half with a late goal to put the halftime score at 4-1.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to lead deep into the second half. Shove then took over with three-consecutive goals including the tying and leading goal to give CMS their first lead at 6-5 with 1:29 remaining. Pomona quickly responded to tie the game 6-6 on a goal by Jana London with 1:08 left on the clock. With under a minute remaining, sophomore Christina Sutherland scored off of a free position shot to put the Athenas ahead for the remainder of the game at 7-6.
CMS was led by Shove with four goals while Sutherland, sophomore Hilary Slauson and freshman Molly O'Donnell each added a goal.
With the win the Athenas captured the SCIAC's fifth seed into the conference tournament and will have their next game away at Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC Tournament first round on Wednesday, April 24.
