First Half Lead Doesn’t Hold For CMS In Loss To Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – All even at halftime, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-9 decision to Chapman University on Wednesday night at Zinda Field for the team's fourth loss in five games. CMS is now 6-9 overall and 2-6 in SCIAC play.

CMS led 2-0 at the 24:33 mark of the first half after goals by senior midfielder Madi Shove and junior attacker Anthea Weixel. Kylee Moore got Chapman on the board to make the score 2-1 with 23:59 in the half. A goal by senior attacker Rachel Darby – the 99^th of her career – gave CMS its largest lead of the game at 5-2 with 9:25 left in the half. Chapman then answered with three-straight goals as the teams closed out the first half even at five apiece.

Chapman then ran off four of the first five goals of the second half to take a 9-6 lead as they would hold on for the win. CMS twice got the deficit within one goal but could not regain the lead. Shove had a game-high three goals for CMS while Weixel added a pair. Allie Kotny and Abbey Messmer led Chapman with three goals each. Freshman goalie Sara Ginsburg had a game-high 10 saves.

Next up for the Athenas is a road game vs. Whittier on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m.
