Two Wins In Three Games For Athenas At Spring Fling Tourney

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team went 2-1 at the Spring Fling Tournament in West Palm Beach Florida over Spring Break from March 18-21. The Athenas, now 5-6 overall, registered wins over Washington & Jefferson and Birmingham Southern, but closed out the trip with an 11-6 loss to Clarkson.

CMS 14, Washington and Jefferson 6 (March 18)
The game began as a back-and-forth affair as no team led by more than a goal. Washington and Jefferson led 5-4 at halftime behind three goals from Brittany Fradkin. CMS broke the game open in the second half, as they outscored Washington and Jefferson 10-1 en route to the 14-6 win. Down 5-4 at halftime, CMS scored 10-straight goals to take command as Washington and Jefferson's lone goal of the second half came with a few seconds remaining in the game. Sophomore midfielder Christina Sutherland and senior midfielder Madi Shove each had a team-high three goals.

CMS 17, Birmingham Southern 4 (March 19)
Similar to the first game vs. Washington and Jefferson, CMS fell behind early and struggled to get its offense going until the second half. CMS led 5-3 at halftime behind four goals from senior attacker Rachel Darby who finished with a game-high seven. In the second half, CMS outscored Birmingham Southern 12-1 including the first 12 goals of the half to secure the win. Shove added four goals and two assists while freshman midfielder Izzy Laterzo added three and freshman goalie Kate Anello had four saves in net.

Clarkson 11, CMS 6 (March 21)
CMS scored first on a goal by junior attacker Anthea Weixel just 45 seconds into the game. Clarkson then ran off three-straight goals over the next several minutes of the first half to take the lead for good at 3-1 with 16:02 left in the first half. Darby scored for CMS at the 13:04 mark to narrow the Clarkson lead to 3-2, but Clarkson then went on a 4-0 run to close out the first half with a 7-2 lead. In the second half, Clarkson extended its lead to as many as seven goals. Darby had a team-high two scores for CMS while Anello registered seven saves in net.
