Athenas Bounce Back With Win Over Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A few days after dropping its game against Chapman in overtime, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team got back in the win column with a 20-13 win over Whittier College on Saturday afternoon at Parents Field in SCIAC play. With the win CMS improves to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC while Whittier drops to 0-3.

From the opening minutes, CMS took control against Whittier as the team scored the first five goals of the game and led 5-0 with 21:11 remaining in the half after a free-position goal by freshman defender Christina Coffin. Whittier got its first goal of the game at the 19:41 mark of the first half on a goal by Lily Baxter to narrow the CMS lead to 5-1. After a CMS goal by senior midfielder Madi Shove, Baxter scored again for Whittier to make the score 6-2.

CMS then closed out the first half on a 5-1 run to lead 11-3 at halftime. With a 12-3 lead for CMS early in the second half, Whittier ran off five-consecutive goals over a six-minute stretch to narrow the score to 12-8 which is as close as they would get for the rest of the game. The Athenas answered with a 3-0 run of their own capped off by a goal by junior attacker Anthea Weixel to push the lead to 15-8 with 16:24 left in the game.

Baxter had a team-high four scores for Whittier. Weixel and Coffin each had three goals for CMS while Shove led with a team-high five scores.

Freshman goalie Kate Anello had 11 saves in net for CMS while Nicole Yorba had seven for Whittier.

Next up on the schedule for the Athenas are road games at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. and at Redlands on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
