Athenas Finish 1-2 On Spring Break Trip

The women's lacrosse team were dealt their first two losses of the season during their Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida.  The two defeats were separated by a convincing win over Berry College.

The Athenas opened their trip against the Ducks of Stevens Tech on March 15.  The game was tight and the Athenas fought hard the whole way through, unfortunately, they were unable to control the ball long enough to come out on top.  The Athenas defense looked the best it has all season, however, it was not enough to stop No. 9 Stevens.   Katie Campbell-Morrison had six saves.  CMS came out hard and scored first, but Stevens answered back.  The Ducks and Athenas exchanged goals throughout the first half and at the end of the first half Stevens led 9-7.  Towards the middle of the second half the Athenas were able to tie the score at 11-11.  However, in the final minutes of the game the Ducks made a statement by pulling away with the lead.  The Ducks widened the gap enough in the last 5 minutes that the Athenas could not recover and the final score was 20-13. Madi Shove led the attack with four goals.  Senior captain Molly Murtaugh stood strong in the midfield coming up with five draw controls.

The Athenas faced off with Berry College on March 16 and came away with a convincing win.  The defensive side held the Vikings to only seven goals, while the attackers put away 17 goals.  Junior Erica Modelfino had two saves in her appearance in the second half.  Senior Laura Hagen caused two turnovers in the victory.  Molly Murtaugh led the team in ground balls with a total of six, while attackers Sarah Dick and Rachel Darby each tallied hat tricks.  The Athenas scored 10 goals in the first half and seven in the second.

In the final game of three the Athenas played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, CMS fell in a close contest with Springfield College 14-13.  Strong efforts were made by the offensive and defensive ends.  Senior Sarah Dick netted a hat trick and led the team in ground balls with five in the first half alone.  Teammates Rachel Darby and Madi Shove both contributed two goals apiece in the first half of play. CMS led by one going into the second half 8-7.  In the second half the Athenas made great defensive efforts to keep the Springfield at bay, but their efforts were crumbled when their opponents scored and tied the game at 13-13 with only a minute left.  Within the last three seconds of the contest Springfield scored the winning goal.  The defense was led by senior goalie Katie Campbell Morrison who made 13 saves to keep CMS in the game.

After the trip CMS has an overall record of 5-2.  They return to competition March 23 against conference opponent Whittier.
