Senior Captains Lead Team To Win Against Buffalo State

After a cold and rainy game against Whittier College the previous night the Athenas came out strong for a united 15-14 win over Buffalo State (NY) on Thursday night.  Due to a scheduling conflict by Buffalo State, the Athenas and Tigers took the field at under the lights on Pomona-Pitzer's Merritt Field instead of the following afternoon on CMS' Parents Field.

The game was an exciting win and started with two quick goals from Buffalo State.  Sophomore Madi Shove made the connection with junior Ali Abramovitz to get the Athenas first goal of the evening at 23:30.  Following the first goal, senior captain Sarah Dick scored a pair to get the lead for CMS for the first time in the evening, 3-2.  The Tigers wasted no time answering back and making their move to regain the lead.  They scored a pair of goals tying the game 3-3.  Senior captain Kaitlyn Desai had an outstanding game on the attacking end, keeping the Athenas close at many crucial points in the contest.  Desai scored a goal to answer making the score 4-3.  Again the Tigers struck back with a pair of goals and again Desai demanded CMS stay close by finding the back of the net.  The Tigers led the Athenas by one at the half, 6-5.

The second half started like the second with a solo goal by Buffalo State. The CMS captains, Desai, Dick, and Molly Murtaugh came together all scoring a goal apiece to take the lead from the Tigers for the final time in the match. The scoreboard read 9-7 at 23:38 in favor of the Athenas.  CMS scored their final goal of the evening with 4:53 left in game play.  Buffalo State managed to put up three additional goals before the end of play brining the game to a tight score of 15-14.

The captains led the game with heart and pride.  Murtaugh came down with five draw controls and controlled two ground balls. All three led the scoring offense.  Dick tallied 7 goals, Desai netted 4 goals, and Murtaugh added 2 goals.

CMS returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 at Redlands at 7:00.
