Athenas Stand Strong Against St. John Fisher

The CMS women's lacrosse team faced the Cardinals of St. John Fisher on Wednesday and played with authority to come out on top with a 17-13 victory against the strong East Coast team.  CMS improved to 3-0 on the season while St. John Fisher is now 0-1.

The match opened with a quick free position goal by St. John Fisher's Melissa Leonhard within the first 30 seconds of the half.  The Athenas answered back with four goals from sophomores Madi Shove (3) and Rachel Darby (1). The Cardinals and Athenas then traded a pair of goals with CMS keeping the lead, 6-3. The Cardinals' Meg Merriam put up two more goals in the half, but senior captains Sarah Dick and Molly Murtaugh ensured the Athenas lead with a pair of goals each to close the half with CMS up 11-7.

The second half started off with a CMS goal off of a free position from freshman Bayley Mullan. For the majority of the half the Athenas and Cardinals traded goals and CMS maintained their lead. With 8:51 remaining in the game the scoreboard read 15-10 and the Cardinals made their final effort to catch up by scoring three consecutive goals. The Athenas answered back with two strong goals by Dick, both assisted by Shove.

The Athena attack was led by Dick, who posted five goals and four assists.  She also commanded the midfield with an outstanding seven draw controls. Shove was on her heels with a double-hat trick and a pair of assists.

Senior goalie, Katie Campbell-Morrison [pictured] had nine saves in the game to anchor the CMS defense which made many key stops down the stretch.

The Athenas will next face the University of Puget Sound.  The game will be on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m. on Parents Field.
