CMS Beats Occidental In Season Opener

CMS opened their season last night on Zinda field under the lights against conference opponent Occidental.  As defending conference champions, the Athenas made a statement defeating the Tigers 19-5.

The attack was on fire and nine Athenas contributed to the total score.  The scoring offense was led by senior captain Sarah Dick with five goals and sophomore Rachel Darby (pictured) with four.  Juniors Ali Abramovitz, Jane Eberts, Allie Haynes and freshmen Bayley Mullan all tallied single goals for the attack.

The midfield showed strong performances from two senior captains Molly Murtaugh and Kaitlyn Desai, who each put two goals on the scoreboard.  Sophomore Madi Shove followed the lead of her captains and also put two goals in the back of the net.  Freshmen Maddie Bannon had an excellent debut performance leading the team with draw controls and allowing the attack to start off the draw.  Allie Haynes had a standout game by leading the Athenas in caused turnovers.

The stingy CMS defense led by Maggie Rogers, Laura Hagan, and Katie Campbell-Morrison held the Tigers to five goals. Junior goalie Erica Modelfino made her collegiate debut with two saves against the Tigers.

Occidental's leading scorers were Isabel Osgood-Roach and Tori Larson with two goals each and sophomore Sarah Kessler added their fifth to complete their scoring.

In back to back games the Athenas will face the Bates Bobcats February 24 at 3:30 pm on Parents Field.
