CMS Beat Colorado On Last Minute Goal
The CMS Athenas came out on top against West Region rival
Colorado College for the second year in a row on Friday night
winning 16-15. For the past two years CMS has scored the winning
goal against the Tigers in the last few seconds of the
game. CMS is now 4-0 overall.
Colbi Brawner (JR, Bainbridge Island, WA) scored the first goal of
the game for CMS assisted by Courtney Cronin (SR, Madison, CT),
which started a long offensive streak for the Athenas. They
dominated the Tigers in the first half capitalizing on almost every
attack opportunity. At halftime the score was 11-6 in CMS’
favor.
Sarah Dick (SO, Beverly, MA) started the second half with a goal
before Colorado College made an impressive comeback with five
unanswered goals. Molly Murtaugh (SO, Wilton, CT) responded with a
free shot to make it 13-11 with 15:59 left to play. Now the
pressure was on and goalie Katie Campbell-Morrison (SO, Cleveland,
OH) stepped up to hold off a couple of key goals; she had 15 saves
in the game overall.
When the time reached 5:21 to play the Tigers caught up to the
Athenas tying the score for the first time at 14-14. The Tigers
then got a quick goal off which was answered by Murtaugh on a free
position to tie the game at 15-15. With nineteen seconds till the
whistle, senior captain Cronin fired off a quick-stick from Annie
Geissler (JR, Mill Valley) for the CMS win.
It was a competitive game between two very talented teams, but CMS
came out as best in the West.
