Athenas Down Poets

CMS handled the Whitter Poets 21-6 on Monday night under the lights on Zinda Field and improved to 2-0 on the season.  The Athenas dominated offensively and defensively making sure that Whittier rarely crossed into their offensive end. The Poets scored the first goal two minutes into the first half, but Sarah Dick (SO, Beverly, MA) and Courtney Cronin (SR, Madison, CT) fired back with two consecutive goals and the entire CMS attack soon followed suit.

As it did in their first game, the Athenas' depth of talent proved to be their strength. Six different players scored in the game, four of them from freshman midfielder Ali Abramovitz (Denver, CO). Without a designated feeder on attack it was hard for the Whittier defense to shut down one particular offensive threat. Whittier’s most impressive goal came with two seconds left on the clock resulting it a 13-4 CMS halftime lead.

The Athenas defense was able to shut down much of Whittier’s transition game in the second half with quick double teams by midfielders Devon Scott (JR, Portland, OR) and Molly Murtaugh (SO, Wilton, CT). The CMS defense stayed strong in the second half allowing the Poets only two goals. The final score was 21-6. The Athenas next play at Redlands on March 11 at 7:00 pm.
