CMS Stays Unbeaten At Home With Win Over Redlands
The lacrosse team was able to hold off the rain and the Redlands
Bulldogs 17-8 tonight under the lights on Zinda Field. CMS improves
to 8-2 overall while Redlands dropped to 3-5. Freshman phenom
Molly Murtaugh (Wilton HS, Wilton, CT) led the Athenas to victory
with a season high 6 points, (4g, 2a).
Redlands struck first after only 53 seconds of play when they
chased a missed CMS shot out of bounds and were able to carry it
end to end and put it by senior goalkeeper Katya Strohl, (River
Forest HS, Oak Hill, IL). Strohl and the rest of the Athenas
defensive unit were able to keep the Bulldogs out of the scoring
column for the next 19 minutes, allowing for the CMS offense to go
on a 6-0 run. Senior Callae Snively, (Cherry Creek HS, Englewood,
CO) and sophomore Cassy Delano (Williston Northampton School,
Boston, MA) led the Athenas first-half run with two goals a
piece.
Birthday girl Kristen Steenerson (SR, Lovett School, Atlanta, GA)
paced the CMS defense who combined for 14 caused turnovers and held
the run-and-gun Redlands transition offense to a mere two second
half goals. Sophomore Colbi Brawner (Bainbridge HS, Bainbridge
Island, WA) scored four of her five goals in the second half while
midfielders Devon Scott (SO, Lincoln HS, Portland, OR) and Olivia
Rotondi (SR, Poly Prep, New York, NY) combined for seven caused
turnovers and six draw controls.
Freshman Jessica Cathcart (Davis HS, Davis, CA) stepped into the
goal for the Athenas in the second half and came up with four
saves. Redlands freshman Christy Smith (Edina HS, St. Louis Park,
MN) came into the contest averaging five goals a game and was held
to three goals on the day.
