CMS Lacrosse Advances to NCAA Second Round

CLAREMONT, Calif. - In its second-ever NCAA tournament appearance, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas beat Ohio Wesleyan University Wednesday to advance to the second round against The College of New Jersey. The Athenas built a solid lead and held on in the waning moments to beat the Bishops by a score of 19-17.

The first half saw both teams trade goals to a 6-6 tie. CMS took control from that point to take a 10-7 lead into halftime. Sophomore Annie Geisler (Mill Valley) and junior Courtney Cronin (Madison, Conn.) led the CMS charge in the first half. Geisler scored four goals with Cronin adding three.  Julia Fouts (SR, Cleveland Heights, OH) led the Bishops with four first half goals.

The Athenas opened the second half with a scoring frenzy, adding three quick goals to extend their lead. Ohio Wesleyan was not going to go away quietly as they slowly chipped away at the CMS lead. The Bishops were able to close within two of the Athenas, but CMS was able to hold the ball in the game's final minute to secure the victory. Sophomore Colbi Brawner (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) scored a second-half hat trick to lead the way.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. The Athenas will travel to Ewing, New Jersey to play The College of New Jersey Lions on Saturday, May 10 at 11:30 a.m. ET.
