Bio

Coach Burton enters her 17th season as the CMS Women's Golf head coach in the 2023-24 after guiding the program to the 2018 national title. Burton oversaw the transition of women's golf from club to varsity status after being instrumental in the addition of the program in 2007, and then helped with the rapid growth of the sport within the SCIAC.

Led by Burton, CMS won the inaugural SCIAC title in 2012 and finished 14th at the NCAA Championships.  The following year the Athenas repeated as SCIAC champions in 2013 and finished 11th at the NCAA Championships. 

In 2017, Burton helped the Athenas win their fourth SCIAC title and finish in the top 10 (eighth) at the NCAA Championships, before bringing home the program's first national title trophy in 2018. Margaret Loncki captured the NCAA individual championship as well, while providing the winning putt in a two-hole playoff to defeat Williams for the team trophy. CMS made a run at repeating its national championship in 2019 after winning its sixth SCIAC title in comeback fashion, but ended up with a strong fourth-place finish at nationals. 

Most recently, Burton led CMS to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2023, marking the second-highest finish in program history behind the national title season of 2018. CMS also set numerous program records, both team and individual, for lowest scores, including a pair of single-round 67s from Stella Cheng and Esther Lee. Lee, who was named the National Rookie of the Year by the Women's Golf Coaches Association, had her 67 on the final round of the SCIAC Championship, on her way to shattering the league record with a -10 over 54 holes. 

During her career, Burton has also served as the senior women's administrator for the department through the 2018-19 season, helping to increase the number of women's sports from six to 11. She served 31 years as women's basketball coach and has also served as volleyball and interim women's tennis coach. Burton lives in Claremont and has three sons: John, Todd, and Michael.
