CMS Women's Golf in Third after First Day of California State Intercollegiate

VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team stands in third place out of 10 teams after the first of two rounds at the California State Intercollegiate Tournament at the Olivas Links Course on Monday.

The Athenas finished the day at +3 as a team with a combined score of 291. Redlands is in first place at -13, with Pomona-Pitzer in second at -4. 

Junior Irene Jun had the low score on the Athenas after shooting an even par on her first round of the 2022-23 season, and is currently tied for eighth out of the 59 competitors in the field. Jun finished off her round with a birdie to pull up to even par and carry some momentum into tomorrow. 

One shot behind in a tie for tenth place are sophomore Stella Cheng and first-years Ella Chiu and Esther Lee, as the Athenas had their top four all shoot within one shot of each other on opening day. Cheng closed with eight straight pars, Lee closed with six straight, while Chiu tied for team-high honors with three birdies. 

Kendall Nicholson carried Redlands to the first-round lead with a 64 (-8), putting her three shots ahead of Charlie Bloom of Westmont on the individual leaderboard, while Hannah Jugar of Redlands was -4. 

The second round of the California State Intercollegiate will get underway tomorrow at 8 a.m.
