CMS Women's Golf in 11th Place after Day One of NCAA Championships

HOUSTON, Texas - Stella Cheng and Tiffany Hu each shot 75s on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships to help Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to 11th place out of 29 teams after the first of four rounds at the Bay Oaks Country Club.

CMS finished its round with a 311 (+23), 19 shots back of top-ranked Emory, which shot a 292 for a +4. Washington University is in second place at +9, while Methodist is third at +12, and NYU, Carnegie Mellon and Pomona-Pitzer tied for fourth at +15. 

On the individual leaderboad, Cheng and Hu find themselves in a tie for 15th after the opening round, putting them in the top 10 percent out of 150 golfers in the field. Annie Mascot of Washington University currently leads after the first 18 holes at -3, with only four competitors ending their first 18 holes in the red. 

Cheng carded a pair of birdies in her first round, including one on the 15th to drop to -1, after she started on the 10th hole. She added a second birdie on the seventh hole in her homestretch. 

Hu also began on the 10th hole and had three birdies, picking up two in a row on No. 6 and No. 7 to finish strong and carry some momentum into tomorrow's second round. She also had a birdie on the 14th hole on her front nine. 

CMS will be back in action for the second round on Wednesday morning, looking to close the gap and make a run at the title in the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday.
