Three Times A Champion! CMS Women's Golf Earns Third Straight SCIAC Title, Amy Xue Takes First Place

PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team won its third SCIAC title in a row, rallying from 12 shots down after the opening round to win by 19, while freshman Amy Xue came back from eight shots down after two rounds to win the individual title by one stroke on Saturday's final round at the Brookside Golf Club.

CMS, which went on to win the NCAA Division III National Championship last year in a playoff over Williams, will now receive the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament to try to earn a repeat national title.

The Athenas saved their best golf for the final round, shooting a 294 as a team, which was the only round for any team in the field under 300 over the entire three days. CMS came into the final day one shot behind Redlands after making up 11 shots in the second round from its 12-stroke deficit, and were 20 shots better than the Bulldogs (314) on Saturday as they ran away with the team title. 

The individual championship turned out to be where the drama was, as Xue started the day eight shots behind, but shot a 73 on Saturday to pull ahead for the title by just one stroke. Xue suffered a double-bogey on the 14th hole that dropped her two shots behind Annie Hay of Redlands, but Xue regrouped to finish with three pars and a birdie on 16 to complete her comeback and win the title in her first SCIAC Championship with a 227 (79-75-73). 

Sophomore Mira Yoo also vaulted herself onto the medalist stands with an even-par 72, moving up from ninth coming into the day into third place with an 80-78-72-230. Yoo had three birdies on the front nine and then birdies the 16th to move her into third place for the tournament.   

Sophomore Emily Attiyeh finished off a strong tournament in a tie for fourth place, one shot behind Yoo with a 231 (79-75-77), while senior Kelly Ransom earned a top 10 finish with a 233 to tie for seventh, after shooting a 74 on Saturday to move up five spots on the individual leaderboard.

Freshman Tiffany Hu was one of the four scorers for the Athenas on the final day as well, carding a 75 to finish in 15th place, as all six Athenas finished in the top 15 and factored in the team score (top four) at least once. Junior Emma Kang had a 75 on Friday and finished in 14th place, one spot ahead of Hu. 

The Athenas will next be in action at the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 14-17 in Houston, Texas.
