CMS Women's Golf Makes Big Move on Day Two of SCIAC Championships, Trails By Just One Stroke

PASADENA, Calif. - After coming into the day trailing Redlands by 12 shots, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team made a big move during the second of three rounds by pulling within one stroke heading into tomorrow's final round at the 2019 SCIAC Championships at Brookside Golf Club.
Freshman Amy Xue and sophomore Emily Attiyeh both had 75s on Friday to move up into a tie for second place after beginning the day in 10th, while junior Emma Kang also had a 75. Annie Hay of Redlands leads by eight strokes overall after her second straight 73, which has her at +2 for the tournament.
On the team leaderboard, it is a two-team race heading into tomorrow's final round, as Redlands has 620 after two rounds, with the Athenas one shot behind with a 621. The Bulldogs shot 306 on Thursday, but slipped a little to a 314 for round two, while CMS went in the other direction, bouncing back from a 318 on day one to shoot a 303 on Friday.
Xue had three birdies on the back nine to shoot an even-par 35 over the second half of the course, She also had a birdie on the third, giving her three birdies on the four par-5s on Friday. Attiyeh also had four birdies on the day, closing out birdie-par-birdie-par over her final four holes to move up into the tie for second.
Five Athenas stand in the top 12 overall, with sophomore Mira Yoo moving up three places into a tie for ninth, along with Kang, who jumped up 12 places with her 75 to move into the top 10. Senior Kelly Ransom stands in a tie for 12th heading into Saturday's final round.
In the race for the SCIAC's automatic bid, which includes seven rounds (four in the SCIAC regular season tournament and three in the SCIAC Championships), CMS moved back in front of Redlands by 15 strokes with its strong performance today.
The final round will take place tomorrow, with the Athenas first teeing off at 8:52 a.m. hoping to win their third straight SCIAC Championship.
