CMS Women's Golf Shoots School-Record 291 to Take First Place at SCIAC #2

VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team shot a school-record 291, led by a 69 from senior Kelly Ransom, as it won its fifth event in a row this spring by finishing in first place at the second SCIAC regular season championship at Olivas Links.

A day after sophomore Emily Attiyeh had the low round for any SCIAC golfer this season with a 69 to help CMS to an eight-shot lead after day one, Ransom matched her with the second 69 for the Athenas on the weekend. As a team, the Athenas finished with a 296-291-587 to take first place by nine strokes over Redlands (304-292-596).

Also adding to the 291 score for the Athenas were sophomore Mira Yoo with a 72, freshman Amy Xue with a 74 and junior Emma Kang with a 76. Ransom's two-day total was a 78-69-147, matching Yoo (75-72-147) for the best individual score on the Athenas, which was tied for second in the field (along with Kendall Nicholson of Redlands). Annie Hay of Redlands was the individual medalist with a 142 (72-70), winning by five shots.

Ransom and Yoo were one shot ahead of Attiyeh, who ended with a 148 to finish alone in fifth. Kang was also among the individual leaders with a 76-74-150 to place seventh, while Xue finished with a 78-74-152 to tie for 10th, giving CMS five top-10 finishers.

CMS added to its five-event winning streak, which has included all five events it has entered this spring. The run began with a dual against Redlands at Los Sorranos North on Feb. 9-10, before returning to the same course the following week to win SCIAC #1 by 11 strokes. The Athenas then traveled to Peoria, Arizona to take first place at the George Fox Invitational on March 16-17 before coming back from fourth after the first day to win the Bulldog Classic on March 25-26.

CMS will next return to action for the SCIAC Championships, which will be held from April 18-20 at the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena. The Athenas will look to defend their title from last year, after which they went on to capture the NCAA Division III National Championship as well.
