CMS Women's Golf Dominates Second Day to Win Bulldog Classic

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team shot a 295 on a day when nobody else shot under 309, as it rallied from fourth place to win by 11 strokes on the second day of the Bulldog Classic, hosted by the University of Redlands.

CMS finished the two-day tournament with a 305-295-600, ahead of Redlands and Methodist, who tied for second with a 611. Methodist came into the day with a six-shot lead over the Athenas after a 299, with Redlands one shot back at 300, five strokes ahead of CMS, but Methodist (312) and Redlands (311) each slipped back while CMS surged forward, shooting a +7, while Pomona-Pitzer was second for the day at +21.

The win was the fourth in a row this spring for CMS, which has finished in first place in every event since returning from the holiday break. The streak has included a two-team dual with Redlands and SCIAC #1 (both held at Los Serranos North) and the George Fox Invitational in Peoria, Arizona.

Leading the second day charge was sophomore Mira Yoo, who had six birdies on the day to shoot a 70 (-2) moving up from a tie for 28th place (out of 64) after the opening day to finish tied for seventh (81-70-151). Junior Emma Kang was the top individual finisher for CMS in third place with a 77-72-149, shooting an even par on the second round, while senior Kelly Ransom tied for fourth with a 75-75-150. Freshman Tiffany Hu also finished in a tie for 11th, one shot out of the top 10 with a 153.

Yoo was particularly effective on the back nine, birdieing the 9th, 10th, 14th and 15th to close at 4-under over the final nine holes. She also had back-to-back birdies on the front nine, carding 4s on the par-five 6th and 7th. Ransom finished strong with birdies on 16 and 18 to come in with a 75, while Kang was steady on her round with 12 pard, to go along with birdies on the 3rd, 5th and 15th.

CMS will be back in action on April 6-7, when it competes in SCIAC #2 at Olivas Links in Ventura, looking to stretch its winning streak to five events in a row.
