CMS Women's Golf Dominates the Field to Win George Fox Invitational

PEORIA, Ariz. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team shot a 294 as a team, nine shots better than anyone else in the field, to run away with the championship of the two-day George Fox Invitational on Sunday at the Westbrook Village Golf Course.

It was the third first-place finish in as many events for the Athenas since returning from the semester break in January. CMS won a dual with Redlands, and then finished in first place at the first SCIAC Regular Season Championship, both of which were held at Los Serranos North Course in Chino Hills.

The Athenas came into Sunday's second day with a narrow three-shot lead in a crowded four-team race atop the team leaderboard, but opened up a big lead of almost 20 shots midway though the day before settling for a 13-shot margin of victory (301-294-595) over Washington University (305-303-608). Redlands, which came in to the day in second only three shots behind CMS, ended up third, 16 shots back (304-307-611), while George Fox was fourth (305-307-612), 17 strokes behind the Athenas.

Freshman Amy Xue finished in a four-way tie for second on the individual leaderboard at +5 (72-75-147), just one shot behind Nicolle Nitta of George Fox, who shot a 70 on the second day to come back from four shots down for the win.

Sophomore Mira Yoo had the top round on Sunday for the Athenas, shooting a 72 (+1) to move up into a two-way tie for sixth place (76-72-148). Senior Kelly Ransom also vaulted into the top 10 with a 74 on the second day to move into a tie for ninth (77-74-151). Freshman Tiffany Hu also contributed a strong 73 round on Sunday to move into 12th (79-73-152).

CMS will be back in action next week for the two-day Bulldog Classic at Indian Springs La Quinta, hosted by Redlands, on Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26.
