CMS Women's Golf Leads After First Day of George Fox Invitational

PEORIA, Ariz. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team holds a three-shot lead after the first day of the George Fox Invitational at the Westbrook Village Golf Club, with freshman Amy Xue one of three players tied for first on the individual leaderboard (+1) as well.

The race for the team title is a close four-way battle heading into tomorrow's second and final round, with CMS (+17) holding a three shot lead over Redlands (+20), with Washington University (+21) and George Fox (+22) lurking close behind. All four teams place in the top 11 of the latest GolfStat rankings, with George Fox at No. 2, and Redlands, CMS and WashU in the 9-11 spots.

Xue had three birdies on her round as she finished with a 73 to tie two Redlands golfers (Keilee Bessho and Annie Hay) for first place after the opening day. She took the turn at even par after birdieing the eighth hole and then went -1 with a birdie on 11 before settling for the +1.

Sophomore Mira Yoo and junior Emily Attiyeh each shot a 76 to tie for ninth on the individual leaderboards. Attiyeh started out with eight straight pars before settling for a +1 on the front nine, while Yoo bounced back from starting +3 on her first four holes to move up into the top 10 by the end of the day. Senior Kelly Ransom also scored for CMS with a 77.

Day two will get underway tomorrow with an early morning tee time at 8 a.m. as the Athenas will try to pick up their third win in three events this spring, a dual with Redlands and a full SCIAC regular season tournament, both of which were held at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills.
