CMS Women's Golf Storms Past Redlands in Tough Conditions to Win Two-Day Dual

CHINO HILLS, Calif. - All four scorers for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team came in under 80 in difficult and changing weather conditions, as the Athenas defeated Redlands by 17 strokes to win a two-day dual tournament by 15 (625 to 640) on Sunday afternoon at Los Serranos North Golf Course.

Freshman Amy Xue ended up as the individual winner with a two-day 154, shooting a 79 on a Sunday with on-again, off-again rain and temperatures that sometimes changed drastically from hole to hole as the sun made brief appearances. Sophomore Mira Yoo carded a 76, along with freshman Tiffany Hu, while sophomore Emily Attiyeh was the fourth scorer for the Athenas with a 79.

Junior Taylor Hughes, who was playing as an individual and didn't factor into the CMS team score, shot the low round of the day with a 75 and ended up in a four-way tie for second with a two-day 155, one shot behind Xue.  Hu also finished with a 155, along with Annie Hay and Kendall Nicholson of Redlands, while Yoo was one shot behind them with a 156 in a tight leaderboard.

After coming into the day trailing by two strokes, CMS seemed to thrive in the worse conditions, shooting an aggregate 310, five shots better than it shot under better conditions on Saturday. None of the Redlands golfers were able to shoot in the 70s, as Nicholson had the low round for the Bulldogs with an even 80.

Xue settled in to take the individual title, shooting an even par 36 on the back nine after a 43 on the front nine. After a bogey on the ninth left her at +7 at the turn, she parred the last nine holes in a row to come in with a 79 and a two-day 154.

Hu, meanwhile, got off to a strong start in the first group, tallying two straight birdies on the fifth and sixth to start out -2. She lost some of her momentum around the turn, including sixes on the 11th and 12th, but shot -1 on the last six holes with a birdie on 16 to finish with a 76. Yoo also had three birdies on the day, two on the front nine to shoot an even-par 36 before settling for a 76 on her round.

Hughes had the low round on Sunday, despite heavy rain over her final few holes after the front groups were off the course. She managed to birdie the 16th with the rains picking up and then had a bogey on 17 in a torrential downpour, preventing her from a possible 74.  She birdied two of the par-threes on the course, carding a two on the sixth and another on the tenth.

CMS will be back in action next weekend when it returns to Los Serranos for the first regular season SCIAC Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
