Defending National Champion CMS Women's Golf in Sixth after First Day of DIII Preview

HOUSTON, Texas - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team, which captured the Division III national title in May, is in sixth place after the opening round of the Division III National Preview at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston on Monday.

Rhodes College currently leads the field with a 305 (+17) after the first of two rounds. Grinnell is one shot back in second, followed by George Fox in third, three shots back at +20. DePauw (+25) stands in fourth, Redlands is in fifth (+27) and CMS is in sixth (+29) in the 18-team field. 

On the individual leaderboard, Larisa Luloff of DePauw and Annie Hay of Redlands are currently tied for the lead at +2 following first-round action. Sophomore Mira Yoo (pictured) is the top Athena on the leaderboard in a tie for tenth with a +5. Senior Kelly Ransom is two shots behind in a tie for 22nd at +7, while freshman Amy Xue shot +8 in her first collegiate round to tie for 29th place, including birdies on both the seventh and ninth holes. Sophomore Emily Attiyeh was the fourth scorer for CMS with a +9, tying her for 32nd place. 

It was the first action for the Athenas since capturing the NCAA Division III national championship in last May, defeating Williams in a dramatic playoff for the first title in program history. CMS also won their fifth SCIAC title last spring as well, before moving on to win the national title three weeks later. 

The second round of the Division III National Preview at Bay Oaks will take place tomorrow, beginning at 8 a.m.
