Athenas Top SCIAC At Second Leg of Conference Play

PASADENA, Calif. – Over the weekend, the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team claimed the second leg of SCIAC play by winning the SCIAC #2 Tournament with a two-day total of 609 (+33). After shooting a 301 (+13) on Saturday, the Athenas carded a 308 (+20) on Sunday to top the seven-team field by 18 strokes.

Margaret Loncki (CMC) and Mira Yoo (CMC) led the Athenas on the weekend with identical rounds of 74 (+2) and 77 (+5) to shoot a tournament total of 151 (+7) to finish in a tie for second-place. Redlands' Caroline Ordian carded a Sunday 71 (-1) to jump 10 spots up the leaderboard and win the tournament by two strokes with a two-day total of 149 (+5).

Day Two Update - Athenas Win (301-308—609, +33)

As a team the Athenas tied the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens for the best round of the day, but the 18-stroke CMS cushion from Saturday remained and the Athenas won the Tournament with a comfortable margin. Both CMS and Pomona-Pitzer shot rounds of 308 (+20) on Sunday.

Emma Kang (CMC) turned in the best round on the day for the Athenas with a three-over, 75. Combined with her 77 (+5) from Saturday, Kang finished in a tie for fourth at eight over par.

As mentioned, both Loncki and Yoo shot rounds of five-over, 77 to finish the weekend two shots off the pace set by Caroline Ordian from Redlands. Ordian carded the low round of the day on Sunday with a one-under, 71 to claim medalist honors.

Emily Attiyeh (CMC) finished just outside the top-10 in a tie for 11th place after at 15-over par. She shot an 11-over, 83 on Sunday to complete her tournament. Kelly Ransom (CMC) dropped four strokes off her Saturday score with a seven-over, 79 on Sunday to place in a three-way tie for 18th.

Camille Simon (HMC) wrapped up her weekend with an 85 (+13) on Sunday and finished with an overall score of +23 to finish in a tie for 21st place.

With four of the seven SCIAC rounds complete the Athenas hold a 36-strokes lead over the nearest competition heading into the SCIAC Championships at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills, Calif. The Athenas (1228 strokes) are out in front with Pomona-Pitzer (1264), Cal Lutheran (1317), Chapman (1319) and Whittier (1330) rounding out the top five. The three-day SCIAC Championships will being on Apr. 22 at 12:00 p.m. at Los Serranos.

Day One Update - Athenas in First (301, +13)

After the first day of the SCIAC #2 tournament, the Athenas lead the standings after shooting a 13-over, 301. The Athenas lead the second-place Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (319) by 18 strokes after Day One. The Chapman Panthers sit alone in third place with an opening round, 321 (+33) while Occidental, Redlands, and Whittier are all tied for fourth after shooting 328 (+40) on Saturday

Individually, the Athenas were led by Margaret Loncki and Mira Yoo who both fired identical rounds of 74 (+2) for the lowest two rounds in the 42-golfer field.

The Athenas' Day One lead was built on their consistency and depth. Beyond Loncki and Yoo, the Athenas had two more rounds in the 70s thanks to marks of 76 (+4) and 77 (+5) from Emily Attiyeh and Emma Kang, respectively. Kelly Ransom and Camille Simon both turned in rounds in the low 80s that did not count toward the CMS team score. Simon carded a 10-over, 82 and Ransom shot an 11-over, 83.

The Athenas will be back in action tomorrow for the final round for the SCIAC #2 Tournament at Brookside in Pasadena on the No. 2 course.
