Loncki Leads Athenas to Top of Standings After Leg One of SCIAC Play

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team sits in first place after the opening leg of SCIAC play. Playing at Arrowhead Country Club, the Athenas shot a two-day total of 619 (+43) to lead the field by 18 strokes. CMS carded the low round on Saturday with a 311 (+23) to sit atop the leaderboard overnight. The Athenas bested their Round One total by three strokes and fired a 308 on Sunday.

Margaret Loncki (CMC) led the Athenas on the weekend with rounds of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3) to earn medalist honors in the 44-player field. After a Day One 76, Loncki sat a stroke off the lead set by Cal Lutheran's Marissa McCardell. During Saturday's round, Loncki carded three birdies against seven bogies. On Sunday she jumped to the top spot by firing a three-over 75. She added one more birdie to the card, finishing with four on the day and seven in the tournament. Her Second Round 75 tied McCardell for the low round in the tournament.

On the team leaderboard, Pomona-Pitzer sits 18 strokes off the pace set by the Athenas. The Sagehens shot a 330 on Day One, before firing the low team score of Day Two with a 307. Cal Lutheran (663), Whittier (665), and Chapman (676) round out the top five.

Joining Loncki in the top 10 on the individual standings were a trio of teammates, highlighting the Athenas depth. Emma Kang (CMC) finished the first SCIAC Tournament in fourth place with a 157 (+13) She turned in cards of 79 (+7) and 78 (+6) and, in both rounds, played the back nine much better than the front. Across the two rounds, Kang played the front nine at 10-over par while shooting just three-over on the back.

Mira Yoo (CMC) and Taylor Hughes (CMC) tied for fifth one stroke behind Kang with scores of 158. Both Yoo and Hughes shoot identical 79 (+7) in both of their rounds.

Emily Attiyeh (CMC) finished the tournament in a tie for 10th place after shooting 160 across the two days. Attiyeh carded a five-over, 77 in the first round before shooting an 83 (+11) in Round Two. Attiyeh put two birdies on the card in each round.

After an uncharacteristic 89 (+17) on Saturday, Kelly Ransom (CMC) dropped 13 strokes off her score on Sunday and shot a 76 (+4). Her two-day total of 165 (+21) placed her in 18th place overall, but her 76 on Sunday was the second lowest round in the field on the day.

As noted, this is the first leg of the SCIAC Championship. CMS holds an 18 stroke lead on the field, but there are five rounds still remaining to decide the 2018 SCIAC Champion. The SCIAC will congregate for the second leg of SCIAC play on Apr. 7-8 at Brookside Golf Club, before the SCIAC Championships take place at Los Serranos Country Club on Apr. 22-24.

The Athenas will be back on the links on March 12 at Sunset Hills Country Club to take part in the CLU Regals Invitational.
