Athenas Wrap-Up Fall Season with Third-Place Finish at Embry Riddle Invite

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team competed in the Embry Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. The Athenas finished the tournament in third place with a team total of 940 (+76) across the three-round invitational. Emma Kang (CMC) and Mira Yoo (CMC) placed in the top five with scores of 228 (+12) and 232 (+16) respectively.

Biola University won the tournament with a team total of 924 (+60) between the two days. The host, Embry Riddle Eagles finished just a stroke ahead of the Athenas with a 939 (+75) to take second place.

Biola's Tori Roeske (225, +9) and Jules Loibl (226, +10) topped the leaderboard, finishing first and second. Just three shots off the lead was CMS' Emma Kang. Playing on the 6,006-yard Antelope Hills North Course, Kang started off her tournament with a nine-over 81 on Monday morning. She rebounded with a round of even-par 72 to sit in sixth-place after Day One.

On Tuesday, Kang shot the third-lowest round of the day with a 75 (+3) to move up two spots and finish in fourth-place with a score of 288 (+12) to lead the Athenas.

Joining Kang in the top-five was teammate Mira Yoo who tied for fifth with a 232 (+16). Yoo was the only Athena to record three rounds in the 70s during the tournament. Yoo started off the week with rounds of 79 (+7) and 75 (+3) on Monday. Heading into the final round, Yoo sat in seventh place, but a round of 78 (+6) bumped her up two spots into a tie for fifth.

Camille Simon (HMC) shot an opening round 82 (+10) on Monday morning before dropping four strokes in the afternoon session with a 78 (+6). In Tuesday's round, Simon dropped another stoke and fired a five-over, 77 to climb two spots on the leaderboard. She finished in a tie for ninth at 237 (+21).

Eunice Song (CMC) fired 245 (+29) and Mary Bryan Owen shot 250 (+34) to round out the scoring for the Athenas in the tournament. Song sandwiched a pair of 81s (+9) around a Monday afternoon 83 (+11) to finish in a tie for 19th in the 40-player field. Owen started off her tournament with an 83 (+11) before carding an 81 (+9) in the afternoon session. She finished the invite with an 86 (+14) to finish alone in 24th place.

The tournament concludes the 2017 fall season for the Athenas. CMS is back in action in the Walker Cup on Feb. 10-11, 2018 at Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas, Calif.
