Yoo Sets Program Record, Athenas Win CMS Invite
CHINO HILLS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team opened the 2017-18 season by winning the CMS Invitational over the weekend with a team score of 620 (+44). After shooting a 317 as a team on Saturday the Athenas dropped 14 strokes and carded a 303 on Sunday to take the team honors. Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Mira Yoo (CMC) set a new women's golf program record on Sunday with a 68 (-4) to claim medalist honors on the weekend.
Saturday – First Round – 317 (+29)
On Saturday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team opened the 2017-18 season by hosting the CMS Invite at Los Serranos Country Club. After Day One of the two day tournament, the Athenas sit in first-place. CMS shot a 317 (+29) on the afternoon to edge second-place Whittier (322, +34) by five strokes. Pomona-Pitzer (326, +38) and Occidental (328, +40) round out the field and are both within 11 strokes of the lead.
The Athenas were paced on the afternoon by three rounds in the 70s. Emma Kang (CMC) and Mira Yoo, both fired identical rounds of 78 to tie for third in the field of 28-player field. Kang and Yoo sit just three shots off the lead held by Pomona-Pitzer's Gabrielle Herzig at 75 (+3).
Just one shot behind her teammates and tied for fifth is Eunice Song (CMC). Song fired a round of 79 on Saturday for one of the six rounds in the 70s on the afternoon.
Taylor Hughes (CMC) carded an 82 (+10) on the 5,888-yard layout this afternoon, while Emily Attiyeh (CMC) and Camille Simon (HMC) sit in a tie for 15th at 83 (+11).
Competing as individuals, Teressa Ulrich (CMC), Mary Bryan Owen (CMC), and Caity Kwun (CMC) finished with rounds of 87, 88, and 89 respectively.
Sunday – Second Round – 303 (+15)
After the First Round on Saturday, Mira Yoo was tied for third at 78 (+6). On Sunday she dropped 10 strokes off her round from Saturday. She put six birdies on the card against just two bogies for the lowest round in CMS women's golf history with a four-under, 68. Through three holes, Yoo was one-over par, but went on to birdie the next four holes to move to three-under. After two pars, Yoo was at it again with a birdie on the 10th hole to kick off her back nine. Another birdie on 16 took Yoo to five-under on the day. Despite a bogey on her final hole of the day, Yoo ended up signing for the lowest round in program history at four-under (68).
Her incredible Sunday allowed Yoo to jump the two golfers in front of her to claim medalist honors in her first collegiate tournament. Yoo finished the weekend with a two-over, 146 (78-68) to sit atop the leaderboard.
Emma Kang finished the tournament in ninth-place after an 80 on Day Two. She finished the tournament with a 158 (+14).
Playing as an individual, Camille Simon finished tied for 10th at 15-over (159). Simon shot an 83 on Saturday, but jumped up the leaderboard on Sunday with a 76 (+4). Also finishing at 15-over was Simon's teammate, Eunice Song. After shooting a 79 on Saturday, Song continued her consistent play with an 80 (+8) on Sunday.
Just one shot behind Simon and Song were Taylor Hughes and Emily Attiyeh, who finished the tournament tied for 13th with 160 strokes. After rounds of 82for Hughes and 83 for Attiyeh, the duo carded rounds of 78 and 77 respectively to finish at 16-over for the weekend.
Mary Bryan Owen (85), Caity Kwun (85), and Teressa Ulrich (87) rounded out the Athenas' scoring on Sunday. Owen finished the tournament in 22nd-place (173) with Kwun and Ulrich close behind in 23rd (174).
The Athenas will be off for two weeks before competing in the Embry Riddle Invitational on Oct. 8-9.
