Loncki leads as Athenas make cut on NCAA day three

HOUSTON, Texas – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team maintained their position in ninth place at the NCAA Championships at the Bay Oaks Country Club on Thursday afternoon in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Athenas, led by Margaret Loncki (CMC), improved their team score for the third day in a row to shoot a 314. Their three-day total of 951 (321+316+314) is 48 strokes back from the leader, George Fox, and just 24 strokes back from the No. 5 team, Texas-Tyler.

Loncki began the day with an even par on the front nine for her best nine-hole total of the tournament thus far. She was just 2-over on the back nine and recorded an impressive 14 pars on the day for a 74 overall. Loncki ranks in the top-15 in the tournament for her scoring on par threes and par fours.

Emma Kang (CMC) impressed on the initial nine holes with eight pars. The second half of her round was not as consistent and wrapped up Thursday with a 79. Taylor Hughes (CMC) and Kelly Ransom (CMC) were each just two- and four-over par on the front nine but then both struggled to maintain that through the next nine. Similarly, Cara Brinster (CMC) had four bogeys and five pars on the front but then an eight on No. 11 induced a trio of bogeys. She did get one stroke back with a par on No. 16 followed by a birdie on the 350-yard par four No. 17.

Twenty-two teams and six individuals competed in the first three rounds. The field was cut to the low 15 teams and six individuals not on an advancing team for Friday's final round. Tee times for the Athenas on final round will begin at 7:45 a.m. Central Time on Friday.
