Athenas move up on leaderboard in second day at NCAAs
HOUSTON, Texas – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf program improved by one position on the leaderboard in the second day of the NCAA Championships at Bay Oaks Country Club thanks to low scores by Taylor Hughes (CMC), Emma Kang (CMC) and Margaret Loncki (CMC). As a team, CMS improved five strokes with a 316 for Wednesday's round.
Still paired with Amherst and Illinois Wesleyan, the Athenas started on the 10th tee early this morning.
Loncki began the round by firing off six pars in a row, followed by a birdie on the long hole No. 16 to dip under par. She finished her first nine at just 1-over but then was tested by the front nine to come in at 77 on the day.
Hughes shook off the nerves from the first day of competition and delivered the low round for CMS on day two. Her 74 was highlighted by four birdies, two of which were on par fours. After a double on the 155-yard hole No. 3, Hughes bounced back for her third birdie of the round on the 335-yard hole No. 4.
Kang played the most consistent round of the day, delivering 13 pars and five bogeys and sits in a tie for 32nd overall.
Cara Brinster (CMC) and Kelly Ransom (CMC) did not have their best days out on the course, posting an 88 and 90, respectively.
The low team round of the day was posted by Wittenberg University at a 298. No. 3 Rhodes College leads the team scoring with the two-day total of 601. The individual leader of the field is Christina Herbert of Bridgewater College. The field of 22 teams will be cut to 15 after the third round finishes on Thursday.
Tomorrow, CMS tees off with Texas-Tyler and Carleton College from the first tee beginning at 10:05 a.m. PST.
