Brinster leads Athenas in first day of NCAA Championships

HOUSTON, Texas – In the first day of the NCAA Championships, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team posted a 321 for 10th place in the team standings. The Athenas were led by junior Cara Brinster (CMC) who shot a 6-over on the day on the par 72, 5869 yard course.

The National Championship Tournament is being held at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas, where the Athenas competed in the DIII Spring Preview in March. No. 3 Rhodes College led the field with a 301 on the day, followed closely by No. 1 George Fox and No. 2 Williams College at 303. CMS paired with Amherst and Illinois Wesleyan for Tuesday's round that started from the first tee.

Brinster posted nine pars and capped off the back nine with a pair of birdies on holes No. 13 and 17. Three of the five Athenas birdied the 350-yard par four hole No. 17, starting with Brinster, and then freshman Emma Kang (CMC) and wrapped up by junior Margaret Loncki (CMC).

On the front nine, Brinster and freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC) each had six pars. Sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC) put together five pars on the front nine, but then had difficulty maintaining the consistency on the back nine. Loncki was just 3-over on the back nine, bolstered by a trio of pars to start it off.

The Athenas remained paired with Amherst (tied fifth) and Illinois Wesleyan (18th) for the second day of the NCAA Championships.
