Four Athenas on All-SCIAC First Team
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – After running away with the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf program landed four athletes on the conference's First Team. Additionally, freshman Emma Kang (CMC) was honored as the Newcomer of the Year and head coach Jodie Burton was voted as the Coach of the Year.
Burton, assisted by Julie Lynd, led her team to the team's fourth SCIAC Championship in six years. She is the first coach of the program and has only finished in first or second place in all six years. The Athenas were crowned the 2017 champions by beating Redlands by 35 strokes over the course of the season and also won the SCIAC Tournament by 24 strokes.
Kang was the individual champion of the 2017 SCIAC Championships with a 72 on the final day. She posted a 32 on the final nine to finish as the individual gold medalist. She was similarly strong at SCIAC #2 and finished in third place.
Joining Kang on the First Team were junior Margaret Loncki (CMC), sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC), and freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC). Loncki was the winner of SCIAC #1 with scores of 78 and 75 and then wrapped up the regular season in a tie for seventh at the SCIAC Championships. Her consistency has led CMS all season and 2017 marks her third All-SCIAC honor.
Ransom put together a strong three days in the Championships and went low with a 73 on the second day to strengthen the team's lead over the Bulldogs. She was last season's Newcomer of the Year and earned her second First Team award this year.
Hughes broke into the team's lineup for the first time in SCIAC play for the Championships and was the 36-hole leader in the tournament. She shot a 73 in the first day to take a 1-shot lead and then held onto it with a 75 on day two. She wrapped up the tournament in fourth place overall.
