Athenas finish third at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invite
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team bounced back from their tournament in Houston for a strong showing at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate March 17-19. The Athenas finished third behind New York University and Rhodes College for a total score of 946 over three rounds. The tournament was played on the Indian Mound Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
Sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC) wrapped up the tournament in a tie for first place after shooting 77, 76, and 77 over the weekend. Junior Margaret Loncki (CMC) was equally consistent in the tournament and finished with a 233, just three strokes off Ransom and in a tie for sixth.
After the first day, the Athenas sat in first place at 314. Three of the CMS players sat in the top 12 of the field as only three strokes separated them. Freshman Emma Kang (CMC) shot low with a 75 followed by Ransom at 77 and Loncki at 78. CMS' scoring was rounded out by freshman Eunice Song (CMC) with an 84.
Ransom finished the round with a birdie on 17 and then par on 18. On the day, she was 2-under on par fives. The ever-consistent Loncki was second in the field with 12 pars on the day.
CMS put up a 316 on day two but dropped out of the lead as Rhodes shot a 306 and NYU broke 300 with a 298.
Ransom jumped from eighth individually up to third with a 4-over 76 on Saturday. Patty Treevichaphan improved on her 76 on Friday to an impressive 73 on the second round to take the lead at +5 overall. Kang and Loncki sat within six strokes of the lead going into the final day.
Sunday was good to Washington & Lee who posted the low team score of the day at 314. The Generals wrapped up the tournament in eighth with a 967 total. CMS was second with another 316 on the final day but the lead gained by NYU and Rhodes in the second was too much to overcome for the tournament win.
Over all three days, Ransom stayed in the negative in par five scoring at 1-under. Each Loncki and Kang finished with 30 pars while Ransom led the team with six birdies, closely followed by Kang at five.
After a busy week on the road, the Athenas next compete March 27 and 28 for the OGIO Bulldog Classic in Indio, Calif.
