Loncki wraps up DIII Spring Preview in second, Athenas fourth
HOUSTON, Texas – Junior Margaret Loncki (CMC) improved from the first day to shoot the low round in the field on the final day of the Division III Spring Preview. After being one stroke off the leader in the first round, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team dropped down slightly in the standings to finish in fourth with a 651 over two rounds. The Athenas faced good competition in the predominantly Texas-based tournament field at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston.
Freshman Emma Kang (CMC) shot an 81 on day two that was still good for fifth place overall. Kang led all players with her consistency on the par-4s. In two rounds she was just 3-over for all par-4 scoring. She was also ended up with the most pars of the CMS golfers. She tallied 21 in 36 holes, followed by Loncki at 18. Loncki ended up posting a tournament-high of six birdies, including four in the second round.
The Athenas' team scoring also included sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC) at 171 and freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC) at 174. In the tournament, CMS shot lower than Southwestern (Tex.), Mary Hardin-Baylor, Concordia (Tex.), Schreiner, Transylvania, and St. Mary's (Ind.).
Next up for the Athenas is the Collegiate Invitational at Jekyll Island, Georgia. The women will play at the Indian Mound Golf Course March 17-19.
