Just one stroke out of the lead for Athenas after first day

HOUSTON, Texas – After the first round at the Division III National Spring Preview, the No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team sits in second place, just one stroke behind No. 6 Whitman College. The Athenas shot 318 on the day at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.

Freshman Emma Kang (CMC) parred 14 holes en route to a 74 on Monday. She is currently in a three-way tie for the individual race with Phoebe Nguyen from Whitman and Caroline Ordian from Redlands. In fifth place, but just two shots out of the lead, is junior Margaret Loncki (CMC) with a 76. Loncki led the field at 1-under on par fives in the first round.

Sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC) and freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC) rounded out the scoring for the Athenas. Ransom's ten pars landed her at an 82, trailing the leader by eight strokes going into the second round.

CMS' 318 is just behind Whitman at 317 but also just ahead of last season's SCIAC champs, No. 17 Redlands, at 320. The Athenas and Bulldogs are the only two programs from the SCIAC to participate in the predominantly Texan field.

Also in the tournament are two other top-25 programs: No. 9 Texas-Tyler and No. 13 Mary Hardin-Baylor.
