Walker Cup comes down to final hole as CMS prevails

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – In the annual Walker Cup match-play event against Pomona-Pitzer, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team won the overall event by 11 strokes and the match-play event by four points (5 ½ to 1 ½) on Feb. 14 at the par-72 Los Serranos Country Club. CMS sophomore Margaret Loncki (CMC) finished as the individual medalist with a 3-over, 75, three strokes ahead of Pomona-Pitzer's Tiffany Gu.

The Athenas posted a team score of 323 while the Sagehens finished with a score of 334. And while the Athenas won the overall event by a comfortable margin, CMS did not seal the match-play win until the 18th hole.

Of the top-five individuals in the event, three were from CMS: Loncki, freshman Kelly Ransom (CMC) and sophomore Maya Bhat (CMC). Ransom finished in third place (81) and one shot behind her was Bhat (82) in fourth place. Senior Caroline Belmont (CMC; 85 – 7th), sophomore Cara Brinster (CMC; 86 – 8th) and junior Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC; 89 – T10th) were the other Athenas to compete.

The SCIAC No. 1 Tournament (Feb. 20-21) at Tukwet Canyon Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. is the next event on the schedule for the Athenas.
