Embry Riddle Invite concludes fall season as CMS earns second place finish

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The brief fall season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team concluded on Sept. 29 as the team earned a second place finish at the six-team Embry Riddle Invitational held Sept. 28-29 at the par-72 Talking Rock Golf Course. With the second place finish, CMS improved two places at the tournament over its 2013 finish.

Facing several NAIA teams, CMS posted a three-round score of 955 and finished just seven shots off the pace set by Cal State San Marcos (948), a team that is transitioning to NCAA Division II. Two weeks prior at the Point Loma Nazarene University Fall Preview, Cal State San Marcos finished 27 strokes ahead of CMS in a two-round tournament.

However, at the Embry Riddle Invite, CMS played much better than its first outing of the fall and after two rounds, led the tournament by four strokes over San Marcos. In the first round, CMS shot the lowest round of the tournament (319) and followed that performance up with a second round score of 322. In the third and final round, San Marcos was 11 shots better, shooting a 303 to CMS' 314 as San Marcos overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round to win the event.

CMS had two finishers in the top-5 (seniors Marissa Suehiro and Shaina Raskin). Suehiro finished in fourth place with a 20-over par score of 236 while Raskin finished in fifth, one stroke behind Suehiro. The low round of the tournament for a CMS golfer came on Suehiro's first round score of 76.

Lauren Kruszewski from Embry Riddle won the tournament with a three-round, even-par score of 216.

Sophomore Taylor Kain-Godoy also played herself into a top-10 finish with a score of 241 to land in seventh. Her best round came on the final 18 holes with a 4-over par 76. Freshman Cara Brinster (256) and sophomore Lindsay Slocum were the other participants for CMS. Brinster had two rounds of 80 which were career-low rounds for her through her first two collegiate tournaments.

With the fall season complete, CMS now has to wait until Feb. 21 for its first tournament of the 2015 season, the SCIAC #1 Tournament at Robinson Ranch.
