Early deficit erased as Athenas win Collegiate Invitational against D-III’s best
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Faced with a 12 stroke deficit after the first round of the tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team came all the way back to win the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate Invitational by three strokes over Texas-Tyler, March 14-16 at Indian Mound Golf Course.
In the final round, CMS shot the low round of the tournament – a 302 – to overcome the deficit and secure a three-round score of 943 to get the win. CMS edged out Texas-Tyler (946) who led after the second round and Rhodes College (951), the first round leader. Defending national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (955) and perennial power Methodist (958) rounded out the top five team finishers.
CMS had two individual finishers in the top-10 in senior Maya Reddy (233) who finished in seventh and junior Tiffany Su (235) who tied for 10th place overall. Laura Lindsey of Texas-Tyler finished in first place with a score of 223 at 7-over par. In each of the three rounds, both Reddy and Su improved as they closed out the tournament with third round scores of 74 and 76, respectively, on the par-72 course. Reddy's third round score of 2-over par was the third lowest round of the tournament for any participant as she had three birdies in the round, all in the first nine holes.
Just one shot behind Su, junior Marissa Suehiro (236) tied for 12th place and had her best round of the weekend in the third and final round, a 5-over 77. Freshman Lindsay Slocum (242), junior Shaina Raskin (253) and sophomore Melody Sue (254) rounded out the participants for the Athenas in the field of 120 golfers. In the third round, Slocum shot a 3-over, 75, which was the second lowest score for the Athenas during the tournament.
Last season at the Collegiate Invitational, the Athenas finished in third place overall.
CMS takes on Harvard on March 21 in its next event.
