Maezelle Millan, Katelynn Nguyen Named CMS Women's Basketball Team Captains

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior guards Maezelle Millan (CMC '21) and Katelynn Nguyen (Scripps '21) were named captains of the 2020-21 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team, it was announced by Head Coach Chanel Murchison.

Millan and Nguyen are both in their fourth seasons as members of the Athenas, and earned SCIAC weekly honors a combined three times last season. Millan was named the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week twice, once after producing three big fourth-quarter steals in a win over Emory, and once after leading a defensive effort that held Gustavus Adolphus to only 37 points in a CMS victory.

Nguyen, meanwhile, was named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week after a huge performance in an 88-86 win over Cal Lutheran, scoring 22 points on 8-9 shooting. Nguyen knocked down her first eight shots, five from three-point territory, before her first miss in a game which CMS won in the final seconds on a basket from graduated senior Lindsey Cleary.  

Millan and Nguyen helped CMS to a 19-8 record and an appearance in the SCIAC Championship game a season ago, when the Athenas won at Whittier in the semifinals before falling in overtime at top-seeded Redlands in the finals. Both players set career highs in points and assists on the year, with Millan totaling 181 points and 89 assists, Nguyen totaling 100 points and 53 assists. 

Over their three seasons with the CMS Women's Basketball team, Millan and Nguyen have helped the Athenas to a combined 66-15 record, good for an .815 winning percentage. CMS has also compiled a 41-7 SCIAC record during their careers (.854), including two regular season league titles.
 
Off the court, Millan is an economics major at Claremont McKenna and is a part of SOURCE Nonprofit consulting, Claremont Women in Business and the CMS Christian Athletes club. Nguyen majors in neuroscience (cellular and medical) at Scripps, is a member of the CMS Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and plans to attend medical school after interning in the summer of 2019 at Kaiser Permanente in Irvine in the orthopedic department.
