Katelynn Nguyen Earns SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for CMS Women's Basketball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior guard Katelynn Nguyen captured the SCIAC Women's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week Award for games through Sunday, Jan. 12, the league office announced today.

Nguyen earned the honor after a career-best effort in a close win at Cal Lutheran on Wednesday. Nguyen stepped into the starting lineup at point guard in place of injured starter Maezelle Millan and poured in a career-high 22 points to lead CMS to a narrow 88-86 win, while shooting 8-9 from the floor (5-6) from three.

In fact, Nguyen made her first eight shots from the floor before finally missing one with 2:30 left in regulation. She was 6-6 in the third quarter alone (4-4 from three) for 16 points, keeping CMS up by one point after the Regals scored 32 points in the 10-minute quarter to erase the Athena lead.

The 22 points broke Nguyen's career high, which she set with 15 against Pacific Lutheran in her college debut in 2017-18, a figure which she exceeded in the third quarter against Cal Lutheran. Her previous season high had been seven points, which she had accomplished twice.

CMS will be back in action this evening when it battles Chapman for a 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion, before facing Redlands in another home contest on Wednesday night.
