Maezelle Millan Named SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week for CMS Women's Basketball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior guard Maezelle Millan of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team was named the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Nov. 24, the league office announced today.

Millan had a key role in helping the Athenas to a 64-54 win over Emory on Friday in their only game of the week. She finished the day with four steals, three of which came in the fourth quarter as CMS was protecting a narrow lead. With the score 58-50 and just over two minutes remaining, Millan had steals on two straight Emory possessions, which helped seal the win for CMS.

It was a big early-season win for the Athenas, who were playing without injured first-team All-SCIAC player Maya Love. Emory was an NCAA at-large selection last year with a 19-7 record, while CMS was left out with a 24-3 mark, which gives the Athenas a quality early-season non-conference win which could prove to be a significant resume boost if needed.

CMS held Emory to just 54 points on 35.8 percent shooting on the evening. A day later, the Eagles scored 88 points on over 50 percent shooting to defeat Pomona-Pitzer on their second game of the trip.

Millan and the Athenas will be back in action at Roberts Pavilion tomorrow night, when they take on Willamette for a 7 p.m. contest.
