Maya Love Named SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week for CMS Women's Basketball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior guard Maya Love was named the SCIAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Jan. 6, the league office announced today.

Love earned the honor after helping the Athenas to wins in all three games since the holiday break, improving their record to 10-2 overall and their current win streak to six games. She had eight steals over the three contests, picking up three in a 60-44 win over Colby and three more in a 47-41 win over Redlands. She also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the Redlands win, helping CMS to a 51-21 advantage on the boards.

Love's efforts also helped CMS to some dominant defensive stretches. The Athenas held Colby to only two points in the entire third quarter of their win on Dec. 29, and nearly matched the feat by holding Redlands to only three points in the second quarter of their win on Saturday. Over the three contests, CMS held their opponents to only 32 percent shooting, while holding an aggregate rebounding advantage of 52 over their three foes.

Love becomes the second Athena to be honored as the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining classmate Gloria Bates, who earned it on Nov. 19 after a season-opening three-game road trip to Oregon.

CMS will be back in action tonight when it takes on Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
