CMS Women's Basketball Hits Break on High Note, Rolls Past La Sierra 85-48

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior guard Corinne Bogle had 19 points on 7-11 shooting and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team avenged one of its four losses from a year ago with a convincing 85-48 win over La Sierra on Saturday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

The win was the third in a row for the Athenas, who hit the end-of-semester break with a 7-2 record. La Sierra, which defeated a CMS last year 65-62, falls to 3-10 with the loss. The Athenas finished 23-4 last year and returned most of their team, while only one of the seven players to see action for La Sierra (Arianna Sheehy) also played in last season's win. 

CMS wasted little time in taking control of the game, roaring out to a 12-2 lead in the game's opening minutes and stretching the lead to 21-9 at the end of the first quarter. Bogle's first-half buzzer beater stretched the lead to 41-21 at the break, and the Athenas were never threatened the rest of the way. 

In fact, the second half saw CMS start just as quickly as it did in the first, as junior forward Lindsey Cleary scored back-to-back lay-ups in the first 45 seconds, the first assisted by senior forward Ellery Koelker-Wolfe and the second assisted by sophomore point guard Maezelle Millan. After another defensive stop, Millan fed Bogle for a three-pointer, and CMS pushed its lead up to 48-21 just 1:02 into the second half.

The 19 points for Bogle mark the second-highest point total in her career, behind only the 31 that she had in a win over Pomona-Pitzer on December 5. She knocked down both of her three-point attempts on the day and made six of her last eight field goal attempts overall (missing her last attempt after a 6-7 stretch).

Cleary added 10 points on 5-7 shooting for CMS, while sophomore forward Kate Parrish (10 points, nine rebounds in 15 minutes) and junior guard Maya Love (nine points, eight rebounds in 17 minutes) nearly had double-doubles in less than one half of playing time.  Bogle was the only CMS player who played more than 20 minutes (22) as all 17 Athenas saw action. 

CMS shot 47.2 percent as a team in reaching the 85-point plateau for the third time in the last five games (including a season-high 87 against The College of New Jersey on Nov. 24). The Athenas also held a 45-33 rebounding edge, had 22 assists as a team (led by four from Koelker-Wolfe), and had 14 steals (led by three from senior guard Teeana Cotangco). Sierra Cole led La Sierra with 18 points. 

After a two week break for exams and the holidays, CMS will return to action at the end of the month for back-to-back games at Roberts Pavilion, facing Colby on Saturday, Dec. 29 and King's (Pa.) College on Sunday, Dec. 30.
