CMS Women's Basketball, Powered by Maya Love's Double-Double, Defeats UC Santa Cruz 67-51

CLAREMONT, Calif - Maya Love scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, Kate Parrish scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the CMS Women's Basketball team won 67-51 over UC Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion. 

With the win, CMS Women's Basketball improves to 6-2 overall and has won each of its last two games, including an 85-74 victory over rival Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, December 5 at Voelkel Gym. The Athenas ran out to a 4-0 early lead on a layup by Lindsey Cleary and two free-throws by Maezelle Millan to set the tone early on. Shortly after opening the game with that run, the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs would cut it to one basket with a three-pointer by CJ Catina. 

The Athenas went on an 11-4 run to extend their lead to 16-7 with 1:57 left to play in the first quarter. A bucket by Savannah Henson ended the drought for UC Santa Cruz, but CMS added five more points on a three-pointer by Teeana Cotangco and a jumper by Love to end the first quarter with a 21-9 advantage. CMS outscored UCSC 10-2 in the paint and the Athenas bench held an 11-4 advantage through the first 10 minutes. 

Love began the second quarter with a jumper to give the Athenas a 23-9 lead and then, at the 7:44 mark, Parrish made a jumper extending the lead to 25-11. The Athenas outscored the Banana Slugs 35-18 and went into the locker room up by that margin at the half. Parrish led all first-half scorers with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Love had six points and nine rebounds. The Athenas shot 42.9% from the field in the first half. 

The Athenas went on a 5-1 run to open the half to extend their lead to 40-19 at 8:32 in the third quarter. Cleary scored three consecutive baskets to extend the lead to 21. For the game, the junior forward finished with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and six rebounds.

CMS was outscored 33-32 in the second half but kept the final margin at 16. Parrish paced all scorers with 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Love collected her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 boards, Corinne Bogle chipped in three points, Millan finished with four points, and Gloria Bates scored six points off the bench.  

Overall, the Athenas finished 24-for-58 (41.4%) from the field and knocked down 81% (17-21) of their free-throws. CMS lead 11-7 on second-chance points and the Athenas bench outscored the Banana Slugs bench 34-13. Nine different Athenas played double-digit minutes, and Love played a team-leading 26 minutes.

UC Santa Cruz forced CMS into 21 turnovers and scored 17 points. CMS scored 16 points off 16 turnovers by UC Santa Cruz. The stifling Athenas defense held the Banana Slugs to 19.4% from the field in the first half and 30.4% from the field for the game. 

A balanced CMS attack once again led to higher shooting percentages for the Athenas, notching a 42.9% shooting mark from the field in the first half and 41.4% for the game. 

CMS Women's Basketball is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 15 against the La Sierra University Eagles. The Athenas are 3-1 against the Eagles over the last four matchups, dropping the contest a season ago 65-62 at La Sierra after winning three straight against the NAIA opponent out of the California Pacific Conference. The victory over UCSC marked the first of four straight non-conference games, with contests against Colby and Kings (PA) still to come before the Athenas re-open SCIAC play on Jan. 5 at Redlands.
