CMS Women's Basketball Led by Career-High 31 Points From Bogle Close Out Pomona-Pitzer, 85-74

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Corinne Bogle led all scorers with a career-high 31 points and the CMS Women's Basketball team held off a late push from Pomona-Pitzer to win 85-74 and secure the first Sixth Street Rivalry match-up of the 2018-19 season.

With the win, CMS moves to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in SCIAC play and have won 11 straight against its Sixth Street Rival. Bogle shot 12-of-19 (63.2%) from the field and capitalized on off-ball movement to hit key three-pointers when the Athenas needed them most. The senior's career-performance included a big three-pointer to extend the CMS lead to 76-67 with 1:39 left in the game. Bogle surpassed her previous career high of 19 points set on Jan. 31 against La Verne last season.

The Athenas built a 42-29 first-half lead on 12 points by Bogle; Gloria Bates added six points, Maya Love scored six points, and Ellery Koelker-Wolfe collected four rebounds after 20 minutes of SCIAC basketball. CMS shot 48.6% (16-33) from the field and held a 20-10 rebound advantage to build its lead to 13.

In the third quarter, Pomona-Pitzer began to climb back into the game. The Sagehens outscored the Athenas 24-19 after the half and were led by Kamil English who scored eight points in the frame. Despite a Pomona-Pitzer advantage in the third, CMS held a 61-53 lead after three quarters.

CMS maintained its lead in the fourth quarter, as the Sagehens were forced to put the Athenas at the line down the stretch. A four-point differential would be as close as Pomona-Pitzer came, as the defense tightened and the Athenas sunk free throws (11) on their way to a 24-point fourth quarter to hold on down the stretch.

Love was one of two Athenas to score in double-digits with 13 points on just 3-8 shooting, with most of her scoring coming from the free-throw line, as Love hit 7-9 from the stripe to help the CMS Women's basketball team pull away to an 11-point win. Love recorded her second double-double, leading the team with 10 rebounds. Her 13 points fell just shy of a season-high 15 points on Nov. 17 at George Fox.

The passion of the fans ignited a rivalry that filled the stands at Voelkel Gym in support of both teams. In the end, the CMS Women's basketball team capitalized on a big night from their fifth-year senior leader to secure a big conference win.

"I wouldn't say I had it going early on," said Bogle. "I think I just hit a couple of easy shots, and my teammates found me for some easy shots and layups, and I just kind of took that momentum with me. The bench was definitely cheering me on, and I just sort of used that energy and tried to fuel myself on offense."

Bogle finished the game strong, scoring 11 points on 4-5 shooting from the field and 2-4 from the line with one three-pointer in the fourth quarter. Love collected six rebounds over the final 10 minutes of play.

For the Athenas, the 85 points marked the second-highest scoring effort (87 against TCNJ) of the season. The Athenas offense looked like a well-oiled machine using their high-post to back-door cuts to get open looks at the basket and it resulted in 50.0% shooting from the field.

Points in the paint were a big nod to the Athenas, outscoring the Sagehens 36-24 in the lane, while holding a 42-19 rebounding advantage. CMS shot 32 free throws in total, sinking 19 of those (59.4%). The Athenas improve to 1-1 in SCIAC play and secured a much-needed win after falling to Chapman on Saturday.

"This win was huge because we were definitely disappointed coming off that Chapman loss," Bogle said. "We definitely went into the gym and practiced and brought a lot of intensity. We worked on a few things, specifically our communication – that was our biggest focus for today's game, just talking to each other, both on offense and on defense, and I think that was the game changer."

Anita Romero led the Sagehens with 19 points, English finished with 18, and Cameron Edward scored 17 points off the bench for Pomona-Pitzer.

Forward Lindsey Cleary added eight points, while Koelker-Wolfe scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds. Bates and Forward Kate Parrish led all scorers off the bench with six points each.

The CMS Women's basketball team is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 9 against UC Santa Cruz (4-2) inside Roberts Pavilion at 3 p.m.
