She's On Fire! Severt Pops Off for 28 in Sixth Street Showdown

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Two and a half minutes was all Kailee Severt (CMC) needed to turn Thursday's Sixth Street rivalry game on its head. The Athenas held a 34-31 lead at the end of the first-half, but Severt knocked down four threes in the first two minutes and change of the second-half to quickly give CMS a comfortable lead. After the three-point barrage, the Athenas cruised to the 76-51 victory over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.

Severt led all scorers on the night with an ultra-efficient, 10-13 shooting performance for 28 points in just three quarters of play. The senior did not appear in the fourth quarter as the Athenas already held a 62-47 lead heading into the final period.

Off the bench, Kate Parrish (CMC) earned a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Severt's burst was part of a 26-2 CMS run that turned the game around. Not only did Severt hit four threes to start the third quarter, but she also scored six of the final eight points in the second quarter for CMS.

With two minutes left in the second quarter, the Athenas trailed Pomona-Pitzer 31-26. Severt made a jumper, layup, and pair of free throws to jumpstart the massive CMS run. Corinne Bogle (CMC) made a pair of free throws to end the half and give CMS a slim 34-31 lead at the break.

Severt then broke things wide open with 12 points in the first 2:35 of the third quarter. She played around the world with herself, burying four treys on four attempts. She made threes from both corners, the top of the key, and the right wing to put the Athenas up 46-33.

A timeout from the Sagehens did little to cool down the Athenas. Buckets from Bogle, Maya Love (CMC), and Kate Parrish (CMC) pushed the CMS lead to 19 points at 52-33 with 4:09 remaining in the quarter.

The Athenas continued to grow their cushion, eventually taking their largest lead of the night at 68-39 following a jumper from Michelle Lanterman (HMC). With the game in hand, CMS used the opportunity to dip into their deep bench in the fourth quarter. All 15 players on the roster appeared in the game, with 11 finding the bottom of the cup.

The victory moves the Athenas to 20-3 overall and extends their program record streak of 20-win season to five straight years. CMS is now 13-1 in the SCIAC and will next take the floor on Wednesday when they host Whittier in Roberts Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
