Double Trouble: Love and Parrish Control Victory over La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – Double-doubles from Kate Parrish (CMC) and Maya Love (CMC) carried the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team to their seventh-straight victory on Wednesday night with an 81-61 win at La Verne. Parrish registered her first career double-double with a career-high in both points (20) and rebounds (14) off the bench in the 20-point victory.

Love collected 16 points and 10 rebounds in the contest for her seventh double-double of the season and her third in a row.

CMS opened Wednesday's game with buckets from Kailee Severt (CMC) and Love to take a 4-0 lead just minutes into the game. That lead was quickly erased and the two sides remained within four points of each other until a layup from Love with 2:26 remaining in the opening quarter put CMS up 13-8.

Early in the second-quarter Corinne Bogle hit a pair of jumpers just over a minute apart to extend the CMS lead to 11 points at 25-14. The next minute and a half belonged to the Leopards as La Verne went on a 10-4 run to pull within five at 29-24 with 6:13 remaining in the half.

Moments later, with the Athenas still holding a five-point lead, five different Athenas scored to fuel a 15-4 run in the final five minutes of the half. Kate Parrish contributed six points during the run and CMS took a 46-30 lead into the intermission.

In the third quarter, Parrish continued her strong play by scoring 10 of her game-high 20 points. Included in the quarter was a stretch of six-straight points during an 8-0 CMS run that took the CMS lead up to 62-40. In the quarter, Parrish played just six minute but managed to brag seven rebounds and block two shots.

Heading to the fourth quarter the Athenas held a 70-48 lead. CMS would grow that cushion to as many as 26 points with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. Despite scoring just 11 points in the final stanza, the Athenas held the Leopards to 13 points and cruised down the stretch to an 81-61 victory.

In the game, CMS outrebounded the Leopards 67-33 and scored 27 second-chance points as a result. CMS took 17 more shots than La Verne and did most of their damage inside the paint. The Athenas attempted just five three-pointers in the game, but scored 52 points in the key against just 22 from the Leopards.

The 20-point victory moves the Athenas to 10-2 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in the SCIAC. CMS will next the court on Friday when they host UC Santa Cruz at 5:00 p.m.
